Beagle Breeding Program

ITS BEAGLE PUPPY TIME - YEPEEE!!!

So I have just bred Champion Hutchinson's Shiitake Mushroom aka Shaquie to Champion Beaglelee Man in Black aka Will.  They will make gorgeous puppies and I am so excited.  The puppies will be due around September. 16, 2011 so get your buddle of joy ordered now ;).

Background

I became addicted to beagles eight years ago with the purchase of my first beagle, Pepper.  I now have four beagles and I decided that I wanted to pursue my love affair with the breed one step further by breeding them.  I purchased Mushroom aka Laponderosa’s Hurricane Warning in Jan of 2006.  Mushroom received her championship in 2007 and in 2009 I bred her for the first time to another Champion, Bradie, from Laponderosa Kennels.  For more information on Laponderosa Kennels please visit:
www.laponderosakennels.com

Mushroom and Bradie had two beautiful girl puppies February 19th, 2009 and we will be breeding her again late this year. Please see below for pictures.   Puppies go to their new homes with their first set of shots, CKC registration and a health record.

Shiitake Mushroom has just completed her championship as of August 2010.  Congratulations Shiitake!

When I purchased my first beagle, Pepper, I got him from a pet store. I soon learnt that purchasing dogs from a reputable breeder is definitely the way to go.  I also had no idea what the beagle personality traits where and just picked Pepper because he was the cutest puppy in the world (alright I may be biased J).  I soon learned the good, bad and the ugly about beagles and I want to pass on what I learned to anyone interested in purchasing a beagle. Beagles are wonderful pets for those who understand what it means to be committed to this bread.  If you have any doubts please do not get one.

The Good:

Amazingly cute

Mid-sized dog so they make excellent pets for a family sized dwelling

Gentle, kind, friendly and loving – they are great with children

Good natured

Short easy to care for coat requires very little grooming

Love outdoor activites

Love snuggling and indoor activities as well

Are very involved with the family

Learn quickly

Full of personality

Lively, active and extremely intelligent

Devoted companions

Steady temperaments

The Bad:

They do NOT like to be left alone – Beagles are pack animals and they need to be with their family or other play mates – they will destroy your house if left alone – purchasing two is a good option

They will follow their noses at all times!  Do not let them off leash in uncontrolled environments or they will be gone.  Beagles learn quickly but they will not listen if there is a scent that they are tracking so as much as you practice recall you have a 50/50 chance that they will listen if something is more interesting to them.

Beagles will escape from any holding area so make sure you have a totally fenced escape proof back yard

Beagles NEED exercise – if you are not going to walk your beagle at least once a day – don’t get one!

Beagles will bark/howl if left alone

The Ugly:

Some beagles will eat feces or roll in feces if left unsupervised.  Make sure that you pick up regularly after your dog and this won’t be an issue.  They also like to roll in other unsavoury items.  The solution to this is to keep them on leash.
